Hawaii's Ocean Users BEWARE!
The Department of Land and Natural Resources under the guidance of OCCL and Sam Lemmo have been against armoring of the shorelines and have stopped many private home owners from doing so. Now Mr. Lemmo and championed by Rick Egged of WIA would like to armor Waikiki and have you to believe that placing T-HEAD groins in Waikiki as part of a master plan, as well as the States plan for Maui will stop sand erosion and sea level rise. These are all FALSE. They can not be trusted. T-HEAD groins will impact the lateral flow of water currents and sand movement. They will rob sand at the ends of the first and last groin structure's making us have to put up more structures in Waikiki. These groins will stick out 180 feet into the surf covering our reefs with sand and endangering our honu habitat in front of the SHERATON Hotel which acknowledges honu forging grounds with a beautiful sculpture in it's lobby. These groins will also change the waterflow patterns and currents in this area. These groins will make it very hard for the catamaran operators to navigate this area. Yet these groins will create temporary beaches for the hotels guest and the beach services that service the hotels. All at TAX PAYERS EXPENSE. These areas will not be community friendly with no public parking in any near vicinity or restrooms, making a long walk, yet the public will bear the burden. They have been pushing this concept for over 10 years. They have filled Waikiki's Beaches with so much sand that as nature reclaims it's shoreline the sands fill our reefs changing the way our waves break and not for the good. Their only objective is taking care of tourism and adding value to the hotels these areas front. We, the ocean user must now be heard before they throw more rocks into our beloved Shorelines of this State. We must help each other even though it is not in our area because IT COULD BE IN YOUR AREA BEFORE YOU KNOW IT! We the ocean user of the State must stand up together for our communities and be heard. MAHALO
